Electoral campaign period ahead of the December 19 presidential elections to start December 3

The official electoral campaign period ahead of the second round of presidential elections taking place on December 19 will run from December 3. During this period, an increase in political rallies and demonstrations, as well as associated transportation disruptions, is to be expected throughout the country, notably in the capital Antananarivo. Outbreaks of violent unrest cannot be ruled out.

Context

The first round of presidential elections was held on November 7. Andry Rajoelina led with 39.23 percent of the vote, versus Marc Ravalomanana's 35.35. Multiple candidates have claimed that irregularities occurred during the voting, calling the elections fraudulent and demanding the invalidation of the first round.
