Officials have ordered residents on the coasts of New Caledonia to evacuate coastal areas after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale struck 168 km (104 mi) southeast of Tadine (New Caledonia) at 15:18 (local time) on Wednesday, December 5. The US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for all areas within 1000 km (600 mi) of the epicenter. Further aftershocks and tsunami waves are possible.
