Iraq: Suspected IS militants kill tribal chieftain in Nineveh December 4

Suspected Islamic State (IS) militants killed a tribal chieftain in Al-Emrini (Nineveh province) on Tuesday, December 4. The fighters reportedly disguised themselves as soldiers and raided the chieftain's house, shooting and killing him. Similar IS attacks on local officials are possible in Nineveh province in the near term.

Context

While Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over IS in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq, and IS militants continue to carry out attacks on security forces and Shi'a communities.
