Lebanon: Nationwide strike planned on January 4 /update 1
Labor unions and opposition party call for nationwide general strike January 4; flight delays and cancelations possible due to morning work-stoppage by aviation workers

Labor unions, including the General Confederation of Labor of Lebanon (CGTL) and the Association of Lebanese Business People (RDCL), as well as the opposition Sabaa Party have called for a general strike on Friday, January 4. Participating groups will protest delays in forming a new government, which they contend has impeded economic growth. Associated demonstrations are possible nationwide, including in Beirut and Tripoli. Additionally, union officials representing transportation and aviation workers have also announced a strike between 09:30 to 10:30 (local time) on Friday and flight delays or cancelations are possible, including at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY).
Context
Labor unions and political parties launched several demonstrations in December 2018 to denounce delays in forming a government and perceived government corruption, including in Beirut, Tripoli, and Tyre.
Lebanon has been without a government since the May 2018 legislative elections as parliamentary coalitions have failed to agree on representation within the Cabinet. Prime Minister Saad Hariri is currently opposing the inclusion of members of the March 8 Alliance, which includes Hezbollah, in the future government.
