Portugal: Protests possible in several cities January 19 /update 1
"Vamos Parar Portugal" protests expected in several cities, including in Lisbon and Porto, on January 19; heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions expected
Event
The "Vamos Parar Portugal" movement is expected to stage protests in several cities in Portugal from 10:00 (local time) on Saturday, January 19, including in Lisbon and Porto. Demonstrators have marched in recent weeks to demand tax cuts, wage increases, reductions in the price of fuel, and improved social services. In Lisbon, protesters are expected to rally at the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, while rallies in Porto are expected on Avenida dos Aliados. Additional protests are possible in other cities nationwide. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near demonstration sites.
Context
The protests are reportedly inspired by the "Yellow vest" movement protests in France. The "Yellow vest" movement began on November 17 to protest rising fuel prices and a planned fuel tax. Thousands of demonstrators participated in marches in Portugal on consecutive Saturdays since January 5.
Advice
Individuals in Portugal are advised to follow all instructions issued by local authorities, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
