Cameroon: Further protests break out in Douala overnight January 28-29

Protests are reportedly breaking out in several neighborhoods of Douala overnight (local time) on January 28-29, to denounce the arrest on Monday, January 28, of opposition leader Maurice Kamto. Demonstrators have reportedly gathered in front of Kamto's house and are burning tires, as well as in the Raphaël area of the city. Unconfirmed reports indicate a related protest will be held in Douala at 08:00 on Tuesday, December 29, although the expected location of the demonstration remains unclear. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any gathering. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Kamto's Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) party staged nationwide demonstrations on January 26 to protest alleged election irregularities. Security forces reportedly opened fire on MRC supporters during a demonstration in Douala, wounding at least three people. Police also reportedly arrested more than 100 people nationwide during the anti-government protests.

Kamto won 14 percent of the vote in the October 7 presidential elections, taking second place behind incumbent President Paul Biya. He subsequently rejected the election results and called for an independent vote recount. Cameroon's electoral body has denied all claims of election interference and the Constitutional Court has validated the election results.
