Ethiopia: African Union summit in Addis Ababa February 10-11

The 32nd African Union summit will be held in Addis Ababa February 10-11; heightened security measures expected

Addis Ababa will host the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union on Sunday, February 10, and Monday, February 11. The summit will begin at 10:00 (local time) at Nelson Mandela Hall and is expected to be attended by the heads of state of AU member countries. Associated events are also being held from Friday, February 8, leading up to the start of the summit. Heightened security measures are expected throughout the city, particularly around Nelson Mandela Hall. Traffic disruptions, including road closures, are also possible to facilitate the movement of VIPs.

Context

The AU has designated 2019 as the “Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons” and the summit will focus on addressing the issue of forcibly displaced people.

Individuals in Addis Ababa during the AU summit are advised to adhere to all instructions (e.g. road closures, vehicle restrictions, etc.) issued by local authorities and anticipate heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, including road closures and checkpoints.
