Oman: Health officials report six MERS-CoV cases as of mid-February /update 1

Event

The Omani Ministry of Health has announced that six confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been reported in the country between January 1, and mid-February. Officials have urged residents to take precautions against the disease and to seek medical attention should they develop any of its symptoms. 

Context

Known disease vectors of MERS-CoV transmission include camels and, in rare cases, other humans. Symptoms of MERS-CoV include acute respiratory issues (e.g., shortness of breath), fever, cough, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. No vaccine is currently available.

Advice

All those present in Oman are advised to take necessary measures to protect themselves against contact with animals and individuals suspected of carrying the illness. People exhibiting the abovementioned symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
