Context
Violence has increased in Cancún and Quintana Roo in the past year with nearly double the number of homicides in 2018 compared to 2017. Despite the sharp increase in murders, the rise in crime has not affected the tourist zone. Much of the violence is attributed to criminal gangs, including street-level gangs and the Jalisco Cartel-New Generation (CJNG).
Advice
Individuals in Cancún and Quintana Roo are advised to remain vigilant for criminal activity, be aware of their surroundings, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments. Keep in mind that criminals may be armed; maintained a heightened sense of awareness when traveling and do not resist if confronted by attackers.
