Mexico: Five dead in Cancún bar shooting February 15

Event

A group of armed men opened fire in a bar in central Cancún (Quintana Roo state) on the evening (local time) of Friday, February 15, killing five people and wounding five others. The incident occurred around 23:30 at La Kuka club on the city's main avenue, approximately 6 km (4 mi) from the seaside tourist resort area. At least two people wounded are in critical condition as of Saturday, February 16. Police have not announced motive or the identities of the perpetrators. Further such violence is possible in Cancún and other areas in the state in the near term.

Context

Violence has increased in Cancún and Quintana Roo in the past year with nearly double the number of homicides in 2018 compared to 2017. Despite the sharp increase in murders, the rise in crime has not affected the tourist zone. Much of the violence is attributed to criminal gangs, including street-level gangs and the Jalisco Cartel-New Generation (CJNG).
