Air Canada suspends nonstop flights between Montreal and Port-au-Prince (Haiti) on February 26 until April 29 due to current unrest

Warning

Event

On Tuesday, February 26, Air Canada announced it would temporarily suspend regular nonstop flights from Montreal to Port-au-Prince due to the current unrest in Haiti. Service is expected to resume on April 29 unless the situation in Haiti does not improve. Airlines officials decided to halt the service after the Canadian government issued a travel advisory warning all citizens to avoid traveling to Haiti. Air Canada is asking customers who have already booked flights between Montreal and Port-au-Prince to contact the airline or their travel agent for refunds or to make alternative travel arrangements.

Context

Violent demonstrations, known as "Operation lock down Haiti," have been taking place on a daily basis since February 7, with demonstrators erecting roadblocks, burning tires, and throwing rocks at security forces nationwide. On February 15, US diplomatic authorities ordered the departure of all of its non-emergency personnel and their family members.

Advice

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to monitor the situation, contact the airline for additional information, and to adhere to all instructions issued by their home governments.
