Mexico: Shootout in Cancún leaves three dead March 2

Police report rival gang members engaged in a shootout in central Cancún (Quintana Roo state) on the afternoon (local time) of Saturday, March 2, resulting in three deaths. The incident occurred around 13:00 on Bonampak Avenue, which connects the airport and the Hotel Zone. Officials have not announced the suspected motive or the identities of the perpetrators, although investigators blame the violence on drug cartels active in the area. A heightened security presence is to be expected in the Hotel Zone over the coming weeks. Further such violence is possible in Cancún and other areas in the state in the near term.

Context

Violence has increased in Cancún and Quintana Roo in the past year with nearly double the number of homicides in 2018 compared to 2017. Despite the sharp increase in murders, the rise in crime has not affected the tourist zone. Much of the violence is attributed to criminal gangs, including street-level gangs and the Jalisco Cartel - New Generation (CJNG).
