Cameroon: University teachers to strike March 13-19

Teachers’ union announces nationwide strike at universities from March 13-19; associated protests possible

Warning

Event

The National Union of Higher Education Teachers (SYNES) is planning a one-week strike starting on Wednesday, March 13, through Tuesday, March 19. Teachers at state universities throughout the country are expected to participate in the walk out. SYNES decided to launch the strike after claiming that the government has failed to pay bonuses for university research. The union is also denouncing ongoing insecurity at facilities in Bamenda (Northwest region) and Buea (Southwest region). On Tuesday, March 12, the Minister of Higher Education announced that the payments are being processed, but the teacher still plan to carry out the work stoppage. Associated protests are possible at universities and major urban areas during the strike.

Advice

Individuals in Cameroon are advised to closely monitor the situation, adhere to advice issued by local authorities or their home governments, and any protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence.
