A pair of improvised explosive device (IED) explosions killed two soldiers and wounded six others in the Tarmiyah area (Salah al-Din province), north of Baghdad, on Tuesday, March 19. Islamic State (IS) militants are believed to be behind the attacks. Similar IS bombing attacks targeting security forces are possible in Salah al-Din province over the near term.
Context
While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
