Nicaragua: Further opposition protests planned in Managua March 23 /update 2

Opposition coalition calls for further protests in Managua on March 23; heightened security measures and transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The National Blue and White Unit (UNAB) opposition coalition is planning to hold another demonstration in Managua and other major cities on Saturday, March 23. UNAB leaders are calling for supporters across the country to protest from 14:00 to 16:00 (local time). Specific demonstration sites have not been announced for Managua, but previous protests have taken place at major roundabouts in the city. Business and other service disruptions, including to public transportation, are possible. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are also expected.

Context

Thousands of people marched in Managua and other cities on March 16 to call for the release of political prisoners and the resignation of President Daniel Ortega. According to reports, security forces clashed with protesters in the capital and arrested over 100 people. The government subsequently released those arrested on March 16 following an appeal by the Vatican.

Nicaragua has experienced widespread unrest since April 2018 amid calls for President Ortega to step down. The movement has led to frequent protests, deadly clashes, and other violence. Activists accuse the government and pro-government militias of committing serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, using weapons of war against protesters, kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, torture, excessive use of force, raiding homes without a warrant, and attacking the press.

Advice

Individuals in Nicaragua, particularly Managua, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid any public gatherings due to the risk of violence and arrest, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home government.
