Burkina Faso: Three civilians killed in attack near Ivoirian border March 30

Event

Unidentified gunmen attacked a public transportation vehicle in Yendéré (Cascades region; west), located 20 km (12 mi) from the border with Côte d'Ivoire, at approximately 02:00 (local time) on Saturday, March 30. Three civilians were killed, and two others were injured in the attack. Two assailants were also killed by the security forces who repelled the attack. Further such attacks are possible in the near term.

Context

Terrorism has become an increasingly severe security threat in Burkina Faso since 2015, with educational institutions, local government officials, and security forces being specifically targeted. While initially concentrated in the Sahel region, attacks have spread to other regions, including eastern Burkina Faso (Est region) which is also known for its high crime rates. Attacks are usually attributed to Ansarul Islam and other groups affiliated with Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
