Canada: Heavy rainfall and flooding in Quebec province April 18-20

Heavy rainfall and flooding have been reported in Quebec province, including in the cities of Montreal and Laval on Thursday April 18. Authorities in Laval have declared a state of emergency, while authorities in Rigaud have issued evacuation orders. Montreal authorities have also launched an emergency response plan in numerous West Island boroughs and municipalities, as well as in Rivière-des-Prairies, Pointe-aux-Trembles, and the Montreal North areas.

Rainfall is forecast to persist until at least Saturday April 20, which may exacerbate flooding and lead to significant transportation disruptions and evacuations over the coming days.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
