Mexico: 5.4-earthquake strikes in Oaxaca state April 22

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Santo Domingo Armenta (Oaxaca state) on Monday, April 22. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicates the quake hit at 15:16 (local time) at approximately 16.385°N 98.380°W at a depth of 21 km (13 mi). The earthquake reportedly caused some shaking in Mexico City and prompted some evacuations of tall buildings in the city.

No damages or injuries have immediately been reported. Authorities in Mexico City stated the quake did not warrant the activation of emergency protocols. Aftershocks are likely in the coming hours and days.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger.
