Guinea: Political rallies planned in Kindia May 4

President Alpha Condé, opposition party to hold rallies in Kindia May 4; heightened security presence and localized disruptions expected

President Alpha Condé is scheduled to hold a political rally at Fodé Fissa Stadium in Kindia (Kindia region) on Saturday, May 4. According to local sources, some 50,000 people are expected to attend the gathering. 

The National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC) opposition party announced it had requested permission to stage a counterrally at Fodé Fissa Stadium on Saturday, but were reportedly denied permission by the local government. Opposition supporters are nevertheless expected to gather in Kindia to denounce Condé's potential bid for a third presidential term in 2020. 

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in Kindia on Saturday. Clashes between rival political supporters and with police cannot be ruled out.
