5.7-magnitude earthquake strikes offshore of El Salvador and Nicaragua May 16; no casualties or significant material damages immediately reported

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck some 39 km (24 mi) west-southwest of Jiquilillo (Nicaragua), off the coasts of Nicaragua and El Salvador, on Thursday morning (local time), May 16. No casualties or significant material damages were immediately reported, although shaking was reportedly felt in San Salvador and Managua.

Aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, be prepared for aftershocks, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
