Remains of opposition leader Étienne Tshisekedi to be repatriated to Kinshasa May 30; heightened security presence and traffic disruptions likely over coming week

The remains of opposition leader Étienne Tshisekedi are expected to be returned to Kinshasa on Thursday, May 30. Several events have been scheduled as a tribute to Tshisekedi, including on Friday, May 31, at the Martyrs Stadium, as well as on Saturday, June 1, with a High Mass, also at Martyrs Stadium. The burial of Tshisekedi is slated to take place that Saturday at the cemetery of Nsele.

Étienne Tshisekedi, the father of the current President Felix Tshisekedi, died in Brussels in February 2017. His body has remained in Brussels since his death due to political tensions with the former regime of ex-President Joseph Kabila.
