Chad: Explosion kills six in Lac region May 25 /update 1
Explosion kills six people, wounds 11, in Lac region May 25; further violence possible in near term
Event
An explosion in Lac region killed six people and wounded 11 others on Saturday, May 25. A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a military convoy near Ngouboua. The attack comes shortly after a clash with alleged Boko Haram forces near Lake Chad. Military officials claim to have killed 23 militants in the fight. Further violence in Lac region and near Lake Chad is likely in the coming weeks and months.
Context
Although the regional counterinsurgency effort against Boko Haram that began in 2015 - led by West African states Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger - has greatly diminished the extent of their effective territorial control, the group continues to routinely carry out deadly terrorist attacks. Boko Haram's stronghold is in northeastern Nigeria, where the majority of its activities are concentrated, though it is capable of conducting attacks in neighboring countries in the Lake Chad area.
Advice
Individuals in Chad, especially in the Lake Chad area, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, limit time in areas deemed particularly likely to be targeted in a terrorist attack (e.g. crowded markets, etc.), and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
