Ongoing protest in Bukavu May 27; road blockages reported; avoid all gatherings

Warning

Event

Supporters of the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) are holding a protest at Place Mulamba in Bukavu (North Kivu province) as of Monday, May 27, to denounce the current distribution of ministerial portfolios, perceived as unequal in comparison to their allied members of the Common Front for the Congo (FCC) party. Protesters reportedly blocked the Nyawera-Nguba road with burning tyres and barricades, leading to significant transportation disruptions. A heightened security presence has been reported in the area; clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Further such protests are possible in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Bukavu are advised to avoid all protests and political demonstrations due to the risk of violence and arrest, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, and refrain from discussing sensitive political topics in public.
