At least six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated in Kirkuk on Thursday, May 30, leaving at least five people dead and 18 others wounded. Security forces defused two other IEDs in the city, according to Iraqi military sources. Though no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, Islamic State (IS) militants are known to be active in the area.
Similar attacks are possible in Kirkuk over the coming weeks.
Context
While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
