LGBTI groups plan Pride events in the cities of Antalya, Izmir, and Istanbul from June 14 through July 1; heightened security measures and associate disruptions expected

Various LGBTI groups are planning Pride events in the cities of Antalya, Izmir, and Istanbul from Friday, June 14, through Monday, July 1, to support equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people. In Antalya, associated events will be held from June 14 through Sunday, June 16. Honor Week in Izmir will be celebrated from Monday, June 17, through Sunday, June 23, with various panels and performances taking place throughout the city. Istanbul’s Pride Week will be held between Monday, June 24, and Monday, July 1. A march will be held on Sunday, June 30, from 15:00-18:00 (local time) and on July 1 at 17:00 from Taksim Square.
Heightened security measures and associated traffic disruptions are expected around all Pride Week events. Counter-protests by conservative elements are also possible during the celebrations.
Context
Pride events were banned by Istanbul's governor in 2015, 2016, and 2017 allegedly due to security concerns. In 2016, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds of people who tried to hold the march despite government orders. Conservative religious citizens often take issue with the public display of homosexuality and past parades have been met with protests and clashes with police.
