Thousands of Venezuelan migrants arrived at Peru's northern border town of Tumbes on Friday, June 14, to seek entry into Peru before the country implements stricter immigration requirements at 00:01 (local time) on Saturday, June 15. From June 15, all Venezuelan migrants seeking entry into Peru will be required to hold valid visas and passports.
Venezuelan migrants are expected to continue to seek passage across Peru's northern border over the near term.
Context
Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10 following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency.
