Iraq: Nationwide protests planned June 21

The Sadrist protest coordination committee is calling for protests to take place across the country on Friday, June 21, to denounce delays by Prime Minister Adel Abdel-Mehdi in forming a new government since the parliamentary elections held in May 2018, and to demand improved public services. Protesters are expected to gather at 20:30 (local time) in major urban centers. In the capital Baghdad, authorities reportedly blocked the roads leading to Tahrir Square, where protests are usually held. In Basra, authorities closed roads leading to the city ahead of the planned protest.

Traffic disruptions as well as an increased security presence are expected in the vicinity of protests sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Additional protests are possible in Iraq over the coming weeks.
