Algerian opposition activists to rally in Paris July 5, July 7; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions

Warning

Event

The Debout l'Algérie civil society organization is calling for a rally in Paris on Friday, July 5, to commemorate the Algerian Independence Day. Participants plan to meet at Place de la Republique at 18:00 (local time).  Algerian opposition activists are also organizing a protest in Paris on Sunday, July 7, at 14:000 at Place de la République. Several hundred people have previously attended similar protests in the French capital.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near protest sites.

Context

Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned on April 2 following weeks of protests sparked by his intention to run for a fifth term. A caretaker government was approved on March 31, though protesters have vowed to continue to hold demonstrations until the elections. Several related protests have been held across France since early March, notably in Paris and Marseille.

Advice

Individuals in France are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, allow for extra time to reach their destinations if traveling through areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
