Peru: Increased activity at Ubinas volcano in southern Peru

Increased activity at the Ubinas volcano in southern Peru (Arequipa region) has prompted authorities to issue a state of emergency on Sunday, July 22. The state of emergency was declared due to the impact of damage caused by the eruption process. The volcano began erupting on Friday, July 19, and authorities stated that a total of three volcanic explosions generated energies equivalent to earthquakes of magnitudes 5.8, 5.3 and 4.1, respectively.

There are over 29,000 people in the immediate area, and the eruptions caused for the evacuation of surrounding villages, a total of about 1000 people.

Other eruptions were recorded on Monday, July 22, and on Tuesday, July 23. Each eruption yielded fragments and volcanic material to fall over surrounding villages. Further eruptions are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals present in the affected area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the volcano, monitor the situation, adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and covering clothing to protect skin from ashfall.
