France: Protests around G7 summit in Biarritz August 24-26 /update 1

Activist groups expected to demonstrate in the Biarritz area during the G7 summit August 24-26; delays possible at French-Spanish border

Warning

Event

Groups of political activists are planning to hold large demonstrations in and around Biarritz during the G7 summit from Saturday, August 24, to Monday, August 26. The gilets jaunes, Basque and Catalan nationalist groups, and a number of far-left groups are among the political activist groups expected to hold rallies and demonstrations during the summit. With the heavy security presence and restrictive security zones in place in Biarritz, many protesters and groups are also reportedly gathering in the nearby towns of Urrugne and Hendaye. Violent clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Significant delays for individuals crossing the French-Spanish border are possible as a result of the expected increased police presence.

A heightened security presence and transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in the area.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, anticipate associated disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
