Germany: Rail service disruptions reported in northern Germany September 30

Rail service disruptions have been reported in parts of northern Germany due to storm conditions and strong winds on Monday, September 30. Rail service in Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, and Bremen have been therefore closed, including long distance service. Train disruptions began as delays at around 08:00 (local time), becoming eventual cancellations. It was not immediately reported as to when service is expected to be restored.

Winds of 100 kph (62 mph) were reported and the storm, called Mortimer, is expected to last until Tuesday, October 1. Downed power lines and fallen trees have also been reported in several parts of the north.

Associated transportation disruptions, including train and flight delays and cancellations, are to be expected over the next several hours.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.

Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain chemical products and wastewater; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
