Iraq: Further violent protests reported in Baghdad October 2 /update 2

Event

According to media reports, security forces fired live ammunition to disperse two separate protests in Baghdad as of Wednesday, October 2. The protests were held in the Al-Chaab and Al-Zaafraniya areas on the morning (local time) to denounce the government's perceived inefficiency and corruption, as well as lack of employment opportunities in the country.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near all protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces may continue.

Context

Police forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to forcibly disperse an associated rally in Baghdad on October 1. At least two people were reportedly killed, and several others were wounded during the protests held in the capital and in the town of Zi Qar located south of the country.
