Iraq: Police forcibly disperse protests in Baghdad October 2 /update 3

Event

At least one person was killed and eight others were wounded on Wednesday, October 2, during a second consecutive day of violent protests across Baghdad. Clashes erupted in the Zafaraniya district of southeast Baghdad after security forces opened fire and launched tear gas canisters to forcibly disperse protesters. Demonstrations were also reported in the Shaab district of the capital, where protesters reportedly erected roadblocks along a major highway, and in the northern city of Kirkuk.

Additional protests are to be expected across Iraq over the coming weeks. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near all protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Police forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to forcibly disperse an associated rally in Baghdad on October 1. At least two people were reportedly killed, and several others were wounded during the protests held in the capital and in the town of Zi Qar located in the south of the country. The recent protests have been motivated by a lack of employment opportunities and allegations of government corruption.
