Iraq: Authorities reopen Baghdad’s Green Zone October 8 /update 14

Event

On Tuesday, October 8, Iraqi authorities have announced the reopening of the Green Zone in Baghdad after successful negotiations between the Prime Minister's cabinet and protesters. In said negotiations the government has reportedly made promises to fulfil protesters' demands. Heightened security measures and limited access to the zone were imposed to guard the zone from potential demonstrations. Prior to the announcement, violent protests were reported in Sadr City overnight (local time) on Tuesday, leaving at least one member of the security forces killed.

Internet services were reportedly restored throughout Iraq as of Tuesday, following weeks of disruptions. Access to Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other social media apps has been restored.

Heightened security measures and transportation and business disruptions are to be expected across Iraq over the coming days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out in the event of protests.

Context

The death toll from the nationwide protests - which began on October 1 to protest alleged government corruption, perceived inadequate public services provision, and a lack of job opportunities - has increased to more than 110.

Explosions were reported in the Green Zone on October 3 amid the nationwide protests.
