Iraq: Access to social media platforms disrupted October 9 /update 15

Event

As of Wednesday, October 9, access to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other apps has been reportedly disrupted in most parts of the country despite the restoration of internet services on Tuesday, October 8.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has announced several social reforms in an attempt to meet protesters' demands, including subsidies, housing for economically disadvantaged citizens, and training and educational programs for unemployed youth.

Further protests remain possible across Iraq, including in Baghdad, over the coming days, amid a heightened security presence. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out in the event of protests. Context

Context

The death toll from the nationwide protests - which began on October 1 to protest alleged government corruption, perceived inadequate public services provision, and a lack of job opportunities - has increased to more than 110.

Individuals in Baghdad and across Iraq are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings as a precaution, anticipate internet service disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
