Madagascar: Fuel shortages in Antananarivo October 20

A fuel shortage is affecting Antananarivo as of Tuesday, October 22. The shortage, ongoing since Sunday, October 20, is resulting in long lines at gas stations in the capital and traffic disruptions. Shortages are also reported in Tamatave, Antsirabe, and Tulear. The shortage is reportedly due to an over-consumption following the delay of a refuelling vessel.

It remains unclear when the situation return to normal. Associated protests cannot be ruled out.  

Advice

Individuals present in Antananarivo, and other affected areas, are advised to fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations. In Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, individuals are advised to keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible. Keep in mind that crime rates tend to rise after nightfall in areas without street lighting, and be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning. Generally speaking, individuals throughout the country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
