Guinea: Political rallies planned in Conakry October 30-31, November 4 /update 8
Opposition political group calls for funeral march in Conakry on October 30 and mass rallies on November 4; ruling political party plans rally on October 31

The National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) political opposition group has announced further events in the capital Conakry in the coming days. On Friday, October 26, FNDC leaders said that a ville morte (dead city) protest previously planned for Wednesday, October 30, will now be a funeral procession for the people killed during earlier demonstrations. However, mass rallies are expected to resume on Monday, November 4.
In response to the recent FNDC protests, the ruling Rally of the Guinean People (RPG) party has announced plans to hold a procession through Conakry on Thursday, October 31. The march will coincide with the return of President Alpha Condé from the Russia-Africa Summit being held in Sochi (Russia). Supporters are being asked to gather at Gbessia International Airport (CKY) before traveling to the Presidential Palace.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated along the march routes and near all political rallies. Counter demonstrations by rival political groups are also possible. Clashes between protesters and security forces or rival political supporters are possible.
Context
At least nine people have been killed in recent opposition protests, which initially started on September 21. The FNDC organized three days of demonstrations between October 14-16, resulting in clashes between security forces and protesters. Dozens of people have also been wounded in the protests.
Opposition members allege that President Alpha Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution to then run for a third presidential term in late 2020. Condé has now publicly called for constitutional change regarding presidential term limits.
