Malaysia: Thousands evacuated in southeastern states due to floods December 15-16

A few thousand people were evacuated in several southeastern states due to flooding on December 15-16; heavy rain and associated disruptions expected

Local authorities evacuated more than 5000 people across Johor, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak states on Sunday, December 15, due to flooding. Johor was the worst-hit state, with approximately 3835 people needing evacuation there alone. Authorities have reportedly confirmed the deaths of at least two people in Kelantan. Several roads in Johor's Kota Tinggi district were closed on Sunday due to flooding. 

The Malaysian Meteorology Department forecasts thunderstorms to continue affecting the aforementioned states on Monday, December 16. Further flooding is anticipated.

Related transportation disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are possible over the coming hours.
