Iraq: Death toll rises from suspected strike in Baghdad January 2 /update 2

Security officials are reporting that eight people were killed in a suspected airstrike near Baghdad International Airport (BGW) overnight (local time) from Thursday, January 2, into Friday, January 3. According to Iraqi state television, Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Iran’s Quds Force, was reportedly killed in the strike along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMFs). As of early Friday morning, Iranian officials have not confirmed the death of Soleimani. The situation remains fluid and details are still emerging. 

Heightened security measures are anticipated at BGW and around the area of the incident.
