Guinea: Clashes break out during opposition protests January 6 /update 21
Rival political supporters clash in Kankan as tens of thousands march in Conakry on January 6; further anti-government protests planned for January 13

Opposition-led rallies were held throughout Guinea on Monday, January 6, to denounce President Alpha Condé's proposed constitutional referendum. In the capital Conakry, tens of thousands of supporters of the Front National pour la Défense de la Constitution (FNDC) opposition coalition marched through the streets. Clashes broke out between rival political supporters in Kankan, resulting in at least 12 people being injured and some property damage. Associated demonstrations were also held in Dalaba, Tougué, Boké, Kamsar, Dabola, Pita, Télimélé, Dubréka, Mali, Fria, Koundara, Boffa, and Labé.
Leaders of the FNDC are calling for further nationwide protests on Monday, January 13. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions should be anticipated near all demonstration sites.
Context
The FNDC has organized several opposition demonstrations since October 14, some of which have turned violent. Opposition members allege that President Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution in order to allow him to run for a third presidential term in late 2020. President Condé publicly called for a constitutional referendum on December 19.
