A 5.3-magnitude earthquake strikes southwest of Huarmey (Ancash region) January 15; no tsunami warning immediately issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake around 45 km (27 mi) southwest of the coast of Huarmey (Ancash region) on Wednesday, January 15. The quake hit at around 04:45 (local time) at a depth of 51 km (31 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
