Two earthquakes hit east of Karakendzha January 24; additional aftershocks possible

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded two earthquakes around 10 km (6 mi) east and south of Karakendzha on Friday, January 24. The first, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake, struck at 12:09 (local time). The second, recorded at 5.0-magnitude, struck at 12:14. There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant infrastructure damages.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
