Chile: State of catastrophe declared in the north due to heavy rains January 28

On Tuesday, January 29, President Piñera declared a state of catastrophe for the northern region due to heavy rain that has prompted flooding in five communes, Copiapó, Tierra Amarilla, Freirina, Diego de Almagro, and Alto del Carmen. Aggravating the flooding is the increased flow of the Copiapó, Huasco, and Salado rivers. At least one person has died and two have gone missing as a result. Authorities stated that rain remains in the forecast, which can render the situation more complicated.

Transportation disruptions should be expected over the next several days.
