Officials at Basra International Airport (BSR) ban entry for Chinese nationals and individuals traveling from China as of January 31, amid coronavirus outbreak; spread of the virus possible in the near term
Event
Authorities at Basra International Airport (BSR) announced on Friday, January 31, that it will ban entry for Chinese nationals and visitors from China from entering Iraq via BSR amid the ongoing outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that originated in Wuhan (Hubei province, China). The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority also announced on Friday that medical teams are deployed at airports nationwide to screen arrivals from China or East Asia.
Spread of the disease in Iraq is possible in the near term.
Context
The first case of 2019-nCoV was reported on December 31 and the source of the outbreak has been linked to a wet market in Wuhan. Human-to-human and patient-to-medical staff transmission of the virus have been confirmed. Many of the associated fatalities have been due to pneumonia caused by the virus.
Cases of the virus have been confirmed in more than 20 countries and territories worldwide. Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed in Germany, Japan, the US, and Vietnam. Virus screening and quarantining measures are being implemented at airports worldwide, as well as extensive travel restrictions. On January 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the ongoing novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak is a "public health emergency of international concern."
Pneumonia symptoms include dry cough, chest pain, fever, and labored breathing. Pneumonia can be contagious and can be transmitted from human to human. The influenza virus, or the flu, is a common cause of viral pneumonia.
