Chile: Protests reported in Santiago May 24 /update 1

Police arrest protesters in Puente Alto (Santiago) on May 24; further unrest possible in the near term

Warning

Event

Protesters gathered in Santiago on Sunday afternoon (local time), May 24, to denounce a shortage of food and aid during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Reports suggest that tires were burned and roadblocks set up as hundreds gathered in the Puento Alto commune. Security forces deployed to the area and dispersed crowds, and two demonstrators were reportedly arrested. The protesters are demanding support from the federal and local government authorities, as many claim to not be able to work during the pandemic.

Further unrest, and potential clashes between demonstrators and police officers, cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Santiago, and Chile more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, prepare for disruptions to transportation and business, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
