Police arrest over 30 demonstrators during protest in support of LGBTQ+ activist in Moscow on June 27; further demonstrations possible over the near term

Police in Moscow detained at least 38 demonstrators during a protest on Saturday, June 27, to denounce charges brought against a prominent LGBTQ+ activist and artist. Yulia Tsvetkova faces up to six years in prison on a pornography charge for posting artwork depicting female genitalia on a social media network. Russian law permits single pickets and the participants stood in line to picket one at a time at the monument to Nadezhda Krupskaya off Bolshaya Lubyanka Street and Sretensky Boulevard. Police arrived and rounded the protesters up before taking them to Luzhniki police station. There are also reports that one person was detained in St. Petersburg in a similar protest.
Further associated protests are possible over the near term.
