Four militants suspected of having links to the Islamic State (IS) group were arrested in Nador (Rif region) on Tuesday, July 7. The suspects have been taken into custody and investigations have been launched. 

Similar counterterrorism operations are possible in Morocco in the near term.

Context

Morocco has a persistent low-level threat of terrorism. Morocco's last terrorism incident occurred in 2018 when two Scandinavian tourists were beheaded in the High Atlas Mountains by assailants claiming to support IS. Last year, some 79 people were arrested in Morocco on terrorism changes.
