Authorities arrest 27 suspected IS militants in Istanbul on July 19; highlights risk of attack

On Sunday, July 19, authorities in Istanbul announced the arrest of 27 individuals suspected of being Islamic State (IS) militants. The arrested individuals were reportedly preparing to carry out an attack in the city. The attack was reportedly to be in retaliation for social media posts insulting Prophet Muhammad.

A heightened security presence is likely in Istanbul, as further police raids cannot be ruled out.

Context

Islamic State have carried out several attacks in Istanbul in recent years, including an attack on a nightclub in 2017, which left 39 people dead, and an attack in Istanbul Atatürk Airport (ISL) in 2016, which killed 49 individuals.
