Russia: Police detain protesters in Moscow on July 23
Police detain protesters in Moscow on July 23; further protests likely
Event
On Thursday, July 23, Moscow police detained several protesters as they took part in one-person pickets in front of the Supreme Court. The demonstrators gathered to demand the release of two activists imprisoned over protests in Rostov-on-Don in 2017. Members of a non-registered opposition party, Other Russia, were detained for taking part in the picket protest, which did not require authorization from municipal authorities to go ahead.
Further protests are likely in the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation and business operations are to be expected near protest sites.
Advice
Those in Moscow are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
