South Korea: Flooding across Daejeon, South Chungcheong, and North Jeolla provinces July 30

Flooding in Daejeon, South Chungcheong, and North Jeolla provinces on Thursday, July 30, has resulted in at least two fatalities and the inundation of over 100 homes. Both fatalities occurred in Daejeon, where up to 187 mm (7.6 in) of rain has fallen since the evening of Wednesday, July 29. At least 85 houses in the Dong-gu area of Daejeon have been flooded, in addition to a number of roads. Highspeed trains continue to operate on a normal timetable; however, other train services traveling in the Daejeon area have ceased operating since Thursday due to flooding on the line. Authorities have also closed all riverside roads in the city. In South Chungcheong province, there have been 118 reports of flood-related damage, including in Cheonan, where nine buildings have been flooded. Authorities also placed a total of seven towns and counties in North Jeolla province under warnings for heavy rains. The Korea Meteorological Administration has forecast rainfall of up to 200 mm (7.8 in) in parts of the region, including Sejong province, until 09:00 (local time) on Friday, July 31.

Further flooding, in addition to transportation and business disruptions, as well as disruptions to power and communications services, are possible in these regions in the coming days.

Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
