India: Militants ambush security forces in Chandel district (Manipur state) July 29

Event

Unidentified militants killed at least three members of the Assam Rifles and injured four others in Chandel district (Manipur state) on Wednesday, July 29. The attackers reportedly detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) which targeted the security forces as they were patrolling in Khongtal at 18:30 (local time) before opening fire on them. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time; however, authorities have stated that they suspect that the People's Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA) militant group was involved.

Further attacks in the area, in addition to security operations, are possible in the near term.

Context

The Indian government is currently engaged in a low-level conflict with a number of separatist militant groups in Manipur and other states in the northeast of the country. While attacks have generally targeted security forces, tactics including the bombing of buildings and vehicles have occasionally resulted in civilian fatalities. A number of bombings have occurred in Manipur's capital, Imphal, targeting both security forces and civilians. In November 2019, at least five police officers and one civilian were injured in a bomb blast in Imphal's Thangal Bazar area.
